Dallas real estate developer Phillip Huffines on Monday was overwhelmingly elected chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party.
Huffines, twin brother of state Sen. Don Huffines, beat Plano immigration lawyer Elizabeth Bingham in a 120-26 vote. Coppell businessman Davin Bernstein received 12 votes.
“We can now declare, based on that vote, that the Dallas County Republican Party is now united,” Huffines said after being sworn in. “We will now take the fight to Democrats.”
Dallas Republicans had to pick a new leader after the resignation last month of tea party activist Mark Montgomery, who stunned incumbent Wade Emmert in the March 1 primary to win the post. But Montgomery, an unknown to establishment Republicans and donors, could not raise the cash necessary to keep the office open or mount a countywide campaign against Democrats.
